As a Dojo we are being so wisely guided along the way by the teachings of Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate Master Shigetoshi Senaha Sensei 9th Dan, & others at the Ryusyokai Honbu Dojo in Tomigusuku, Okinawa. We are members of the Ryusyokai Okinawa Goju Ryu Karate as an England recognised Dojo. Anyone interested may contact us at :: shinkendojo@hotmail.com |
It is our belief that good quality martial arts is based upon pure skill achieved through a deep understanding of principles, combined with many hours of hard work and practise in the Dojo, or place of training. Whilst being taught within the parameters of etiquette, courtesy and discipline not only produces good all round Martial artists, but also produces good people. Ego's are not encouraged within the Shinken Dojo, confidence though in ones own abilities in the Art is promoted and nurtured.
Glyn Jones accepts that our ways and methods are not for everyone, however these are the ways we choose to train. The attitude and atmosphere within the Shinken Dojo is one of seriousness and hard work, whilst being accompanied by a friendly and approachable manner. Many of our training methods may be new to some as well as being different to most. As an example we do not Kiai either, not in a common Karate way anyway, but using short bursts of emotion. Our methods are not basic or rigid and are certainly not regimental by their nature. Glyn Jones though does not change things or lower standards to attract new students in to his Shinken Dojo, quite the opposite in fact. All students though are individuals and treated as such and work within their own capabilities. Prespective new students must be at least 16 years of age and are accepted by Glyn Jones on a short trial basis. As was always the traditional way, he chooses who he wishes to teach. In reality though those that wish to be apart of us are to be, hard working, dedicated, courteous, & sincere. This is all we ask!!!
Members of the Shinken Dojo are predominately long standing and as such there is a warm welcome guaranteed to all serious people wishing to train with us. In Okinawa the word "Kokuro" is used to describe a good heart or a kind person. In the Shinken Dojo this word is the foundation of each member.

The Shinken Dojo was established in the West Midlands area of England, by Glyn Jones, with the intention of creating a place of training that would genuinely reflect the more authentic, or original ways of practising the Martial Arts as an effective fighting art. This being through the base art of Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate & Ti, together with Glyns understanding of old style Judo & Ju Jutsu, as taught to him as a youngster. These arts he feels are so often neglected, watered down, or at times totaly misunderstood or poorly represented in the West. The Shinken Dojo name means that one is Serious or Sincere. Where by history states that the real sword or fist as in "Shinken", is one which is honest or true, whilst being fearless and fully commited in times of seriousness or confrontation. The basis of the Shinken Dojo has no interest in financial gain, large classes, sporty competitions, fancy offers or frills. This way we can focus solely on the most important aspect of deeply understanding and practising training methods up to the highest levels of effectiveness.
